Gut Microbes Might Reflect Health, Diet of Older Americans
Recent research shows microflora in seniors living in long-term care facilities is less diverse, and significantly correlates with measures of frailty, co-morbidity, markers of inflammation and other factors that contribute to aging and death. According to the authors, seniors may need certain dietary supplements to improve their microbial health
People over 60 can have as much as 1,000-fold less "friendly" bacteria in their guts compared to younger adults, and increased levels of disease-causing microbes
Previous research found that consumption of the probiotic strain known as Bifidobacterium lactis resulted in increases in both the number and disease-fighting capacity of white immune cells, thereby bolstering the immune system in aging seniors, improving their abilities to fight disease
The best way to ensure optimal gut flora is to regularly consume traditionally fermented or cultured foods and avoid sugar and processed foods
New Study Shows This Potent Vitamin Helps Prevent Breast Cancer
Researchers revealed new mechanisms by which vitamin D is effective against breast cancer cells and increasing expression of a tumor suppressor
Past research also supports the effectiveness of vitamin D for breast cancer, with one study showing light-skinned women who had high amounts of long-term sun exposure had half the risk of developing advanced breast cancer (cancer that spreads beyond your breast) as women with lower amounts of regular sun exposure
Vitamin D has an impact on not only cancer but also autoimmune diseases, heart disease, obesity, dementia, and more
The ideal way to optimize your vitamin D level is through sun exposure or a safe tanning bed

Collusion Between Pharmaceutical Industry and Government Deepens
In January 2010, Julie Gerberding, former director of the CDC, became the President of Merck’s vaccine unit. Gerberding has admitted her “bullish” stance on vaccines, and has a long history of disregard for vaccine safety
January 2011, Elias Zerhouni, former director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)—one of the world’s foremost medical research centers, and an agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services—became the President of Sanofi-Aventis’ research labs. Under his lead, the NIH became embroiled in scandal when it became apparent that the agency allowed its employees to have conflicts of interest and financial ties to industry
Mercola.com Celebrates its 15-Year Anniversary
Mercola.com celebrates its 15th year online!
Since its inception in 1997, Mercola.com has consistently shared the news well before the mainstream, such as exposing Merck’s drug, Vioxx, for the killer that it was, years before major media started reporting it and providing leading edge news on the Swine Flu Epidemic to counter the fear propaganda that the media was spouting
We’ve reached many milestones during this 15-year journey. One of the biggest was the founding of the Health Liberty initiative last year, which has several major health liberty goals: Abolishing the use of mercury in dentistry, and getting fluoride removed from our water systems; promoting the right to informed consent when it comes to vaccines, and to insisting on the freedom of choice; and fighting for labeling of genetically engineered foods

Obesity Surpasses Smoking in Terms of Ill Health Effects
Data collected from over 60,000 Canadians show that obesity leads to more doctor visits than smoking
With the obesity epidemic putting pressure on health care systems everywhere, this news could trigger financial penalties or incentives to get people to lose weight
Other research indicates that lack of exercise causes as many as 1 in 10 premature deaths around the world each year — roughly as many as smoking
Most adults and teens aren’t physically active enough to stay healthy and maintain ideal weight. An estimated 80 percent of 13 to 15 year olds are not getting enough physical activity
Recent research found that TV-time is linked to sleep problems, weight problems, and weaker muscles in children. This can not only affect performance in sports activities, but also cardiovascular health and susceptibility to injuries
It Comes Down to the “Wins”
Every pro athlete will tell you it’s about the “W’s”-- your big and small wins; each day, give yourself a chance for a “W”
You cannot "spot reduce" body fat, but you can use "spot sculpting" to focus on and tone specific muscle groups when strength training
Exercising at a higher intensity may help you burn more calories and reduce your waist size; high-intensity exercise can be performed in intervals to help your body adapt

This New Drug Appears to Cause Cancer Cells to Self-Destruct
An experimental cancer drug called DCA (dichloroacetate) shows promise in the fight against cancer by altering cancer cell metabolism and inducing cancer cell death; DCA appears to exert anti-tumor effects against several forms of cancer, including brain, endometrial, cervical, prostate, breast, and colorectal cancers
DCA forces cancer cells to shift from their preferred method of generating energy (glycolysis) to the method normal cells prefer (glucose oxidation) and “reawakens” cancer cells’ mitochondria
There are serious side effects reported by some adults self-administering DCA, including peripheral neuropathy and encephalopathy, so more research is needed before DCA can be considered safe
Optimizing your vitamin D level is one of the most important steps you can take to protect yourself from cancer
Certain foods mimic the actions of DCA without ANY side effects, such as broccoli and the spice turmeric. [But chlorine dioxide produced by MMS may have the same effect as DCA without the side effects.]
New Insights into Links Between Immune Function and Sleep
Recent research shows that sleep deprivation has the same effect on your immune system as physical stress or disease, which is why you may feel ill after a sleepless night
Drug therapies that either turn your immune system on or off are unlikely to produce optimal health, as such artificial manipulation can easily cause a cascade of detrimental side effects. The connections between sleep, immune function, and health are becoming ever more clear.
Lifestyle choices such as diet, physical activity, and proper sleep can have a profound impact on your health by rebalancing and harmonizing your body, allowing it to function optimally—without resorting to drugs to artificially try to force your body into an unnatural response pattern

Mammograms Have 'Limited or No Effect' on Breast Health
New research showed mammograms have little or no influence on the number of women who die from breast cancer
Past research also found the reduction in mortality as a result of mammographic screening was ... nonexistent
Due to false positives, leading to unnecessary and harmful invasive procedures like biopsy, surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, mammograms often cause more harm than good
Food And Water, Nope. Vaccines, Yep.
Bill Gates and government programs have given billions to fund vaccine programs to third-world countries, while the children there are suffering from lack of food, clean water and proper sanitation
In one Uganda village, children are offered free vaccines against measles and polio, but they are starving, have no access to clean water, and suffer from illnesses spread by lack of sanitation
With all of the billions being poured into vaccines to “save” the children, how many water purification systems could have been built? How many sanitation facilities? How many rations of meat and fresh produce?

Decade-Long Feeding Study Reveals Significant Health Hazards of Genetically Engineered Foods
According to results from a 10-year long feeding study on rats, mice, pigs and salmon, genetically engineered feed causes obesity, along with significant changes in the digestive system and major organs, including the liver, kidneys, pancreas, genitals and more
Animals fed genetically engineered Bt corn were less able to digest proteins due to alterations in the micro-structure of their intestines. They also suffered immune system alterations. Impaired ability to digest proteins can have far-reaching implications for your health
The USDA has announced its decision to deregulate Monsanto’s Roundup Ready genetically modified (GM) sugar beets. GM Roundup Ready crops and glyphosate (the active ingredient in the herbicide Roundup) have also been linked to serious health problems, particularly relating to fertility and birth defects
GM seeds pose an unprecedented threat to food security and national sovereignty
Harvard Study Finds Fluoride Lowers IQ
A review of brain studies involving the use of fluoride has concluded that one of the adverse effects of fluoride exposure on children is damage to their neurological development.
According to the Harvard researchers, children who lived in high-fluoride areas had “significantly lower IQ than those in low fluoride areas”
There have been over 23 human studies and 100 animal studies linking fluoride to brain damage
Fluoride's predominant action is on the surface of the tooth (although even this is now questionable) and not from inside the body – so the idea that many Americans are still being forced to swallow it for their teeth defies all common reason
Healthy teeth come, primarily, from a healthy diet – not from drinking toxic fluoride in your water

European Commission Report Recommends Phasing Out Dental Amalgam
Amalgam is an archaic, dangerous dental practice left over from the US Civil War Era and is driven entirely by profits, without regard for human health
A European Commission report now recommends phasing out dental amalgam to reduce mercury pollution, which threatens the health of the environment, wildlife, and humans
According to calculations based on the critical load concept, more than 70 percent of the European ecosystem is estimated to be at risk today due to mercury emissions—a significant portion of which comes from dental use of mercury amalgam
City Officials Are Waging a War on Gardens
Across the United States and Canada a war is being waged against urban homeowners who want to plant gardens on their own property.
From Quebec to Oklahoma to New Jersey to Michigan and Georgia, people who have the “audacity” to try growing their own fresh, organic foods are being forced to pull up their plants, or in some cases, have had them dug up by city machinery.
Legal codes that outlaw planting vegetables on a large percentage of your yard, or restrict them to only certain areas, like the backyard out of view of the public, truly defy all common sense, as vegetable gardens are far more environmentally friendly than lawns, which demand chemicals, mowing and watering while giving nothing in return.
When governments start meddling with the issue of food freedom, including the ability to grow your own food on your own land, it is a serious affront, as most people would agree this is an absolute, basic, and unalienable right.

Artificial Sweeteners May Be Worse than Sugar for Diabetics
Diet foods and drinks are widely promoted to help you lose weight, but mounting evidence shows aspartame actually makes you fatter, increases dangerous visceral fat deposits, and adversely affects your blood glucose levels and worsens insulin sensitivity
The classic study conducted by the American Cancer Society 25 years ago of 80,000 women, which showed those who consumed diet sodas gained more weight than those that consumed regular sodas, is routinely ignored. Newer studies have also supported this early finding.
Recent animal research also shows exposure to aspartame in utero has a detrimental effect on learning and memory. Excitotoxins like aspartate and MSG have also been implicated in worsening fibromyalgia and irritable bowel symptoms
Read labels and avoid most processed foods
Too Much Light at Night May Lead to Depression
A study done with hamsters at Ohio State University Medical Center has found that chronic exposure to dim light at night can cause signs of depression after just a few weeks
Exposure to light at night (even dim light) can suppress your body’s melatonin production, and there are many studies that suggest melatonin levels (and by proxy light exposures) control mood-related symptoms, such as those associated with depression
Nighttime light exposure is also linked to health conditions such as obesity, cancer, diabetes, and reproductive problems
You may be able to undo some of the damage caused by nighttime light exposure by turning off your television, computer and smartphone earlier, and making sure your bedroom is free from all sources of light

Fat, Not Glucose, is the Preferred Fuel for Your Body
Contrary to popular belief, glucose is NOT the preferred fuel of human metabolism; fat is
Carbohydrate intake is the primary factor that determines your body’s fat ratio, and processed grains and sugars (particularly fructose in sugar etc) are the primary culprits behind our skyrocketing obesity and diabetes rates
According to experts, carbs should make up only 20 percent of your diet, while 50-70 percent of your diet should be healthy fats. Fat is far more satiating than carbs, so if you have cut down on carbs and feel ravenous, this is a sign that you haven't replaced them with sufficient amounts of healthy fat
Six Great Gadgets to Improve Your Workouts
If your workout could use a bit of freshening up, you can’t go wrong by investing in some awesome gadgets that can make your exercise sessions more fun … and functional
Novel workout gadgets include water shoes with “spider rubber” soles that offer superior grip, a waterproof MP3 player that lets you listen to music underwater, and special socks with a built-in “air conditioning” fabric system to keep your feet cool and dry
Though not technically a gadget, more of a strategy, is the exciting notion that high-intensity interval training, which requires but a fraction of the time compared to conventional cardio, is FAR more efficient, and more effective, allowing you to reap greater rewards in less time

Do YOU Take Any of These 11 Dangerous Cholesterol Drugs?
One in four Americans over the age of 45 are now taking a statin drug, despite the fact that there are over 900 studies proving their adverse effects, which run the gamut from muscle problems to diabetes and increased cancer risk.
Statins deplete your body of the nutrient CoQ10, which can have devastating results. If you take statin drugs without taking CoQ10, your health is at serious risk. If you have symptoms of statin damage such as muscle pain, take anywhere from 200 to 500 mg of CoQ10 or ubiquinol, which is the reduced form. Ubiquinol is the recommended form if you’re over the age of 25. For preventative use, take around 100-200 mg.
Statins also impair the function of all sterols, including healthy cholesterol and vitamin D (which is similar to cholesterol and is produced from cholesterol in your skin), all your sex hormones, cortisone, the dolichols, which are involved in keeping the membranes inside your cells healthy
Odds are greater than 100 to 1 that, if you're taking a statin, you don't really need it. The ONLY subgroup that might benefit are those born with a genetic defect, called familial hypercholesterolemia, as this makes them resistant to traditional measures of normalizing cholesterol.
Statins are in fact classified as a "pregnancy Category X medication", meaning it causes serious birth defects, and should NEVER be used by a woman who is pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
Does Low Income Mean More Medications?
A survey conducted by Forbes found that respondents at the lowest income levels are much more likely to be taking high levels of prescription drugs―four or more―than other respondents
More than 10 percent of low-income people (those making $0 to $24,999 a year) were taking four or more prescription drugs, compared to none of those in the highest income group ($100,000-$149,000)
This may be because the federal health care system encourages polypharmacy (taking more than one drug), which ensures repeat visits to doctors
Many are under the impression that government-sponsored healthcare will lead to less prescription drug use, but in reality it is likely to make their use explode – which could spell disaster for Americans’ health

Shocking Story Reveals How the FDA Is Recklessly Abandoning Drug Safety
Learn how the FDA bypassed or ignored safety issues on major drug approvals from Ronald Kavanagh, who was a drug reviewer for the FDA in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research from 1998 to 2008
He reveals some of the internal rules of the FDA that are clearly designed to thwart serious safety reviews from the get-go, and other loopholes frequently used by drug companies to circumvent safety investigations
Five years ago, a Subcommittee on Science and Technology report entitled “FDA Science and Mission at Risk” detailed how the FDA cannot fulfill its mission, in part because its scientific base has eroded and its scientific organizational structure is weak
The subcommittee concluded the FDA’s failures place the health of Americans and the financial health of the nation at grave risk
Hunter Gatherer Clue to Obesity
Even though hunter-gatherer tribe members spent many hours trekking long distances to hunt and forage for food, new research shows they still expended no more calories each day than adults in modern Europe and the United States
About 80 percent of your ability to reduce excess body fat is determined by what you eat, with the other 20 percent related to exercise and other healthy lifestyle habits such as sleep and stress reduction
We've strayed too far from the foods we are designed to eat, so going back to basics and refocusing your diet on fresh, unprocessed whole foods, including only a minimum of sugars and grains, will help people lose weight

Harvard Study Confirms Fluoride Reduces Children's IQ
More than 23 human studies and 100 animal studies have linked fluoride to brain damage
Fluoride has immunosuppressive effects at low dosages, which can raise your risk of chronic disease, including cancer. Long-lost research linking fluoride to cancer has resurfaced in a Dutch film clip featuring Dr. Dean Burk, co-founder of the US National Cancer Institute and head of its cytochemistry department for over 30 years. In a taped interview, he equates water fluoridation to public murder
Is NYU Dental School Going ‘Amalgam-Free’?
A letter from the faculty at the New York University College of Dentistry to students indicates that the school will no longer recommend mercury amalgam fillings as the default route of treatment, but will recommend composites instead
The letter cited a stand by the United Nations Environmental Program, which proposes phasing out the use of mercury-containing products including amalgam
Modern materials like resin composites and glass ionomers have rendered amalgam completely unnecessary for virtually any clinical situation, and these alternatives are far safer for human health and the environment

In Mammogram Debate, Politics Trounces Science
Excerpts from a new book on mammography delves into the questionable practices supporting conventional breast cancer screening and reveals the politics behind the promotion of mammography
A recent article in the British Medical Journal exposes how Susan G. Komen for the Cure is using misleading statistics to persuade women to undergo mammography. Contrary to Komen’s overblown claims, the data shows mammography does not reduce breast cancer deaths
The Microscopic Zoo within Us
There’s a microbial zoo living inside you, literally millions of microscopic organisms―more than 10,000 different kinds of them―all co-existing with each other and you
While a few of these organisms can sometimes wreak havoc with your system, the majority of these little “bugs” are good, helping you digest your food, stay protected from infections, and even keeping your immune system properly regulated to fend off autoimmune diseases like asthma, allergies, and diabetes
In addition to avoiding unnecessary antibiotics (both medically and in your food) and antibacterial soaps, maintaining optimal gut flora, and 'reseeding' your gut with fermented foods and probiotics, like natural saurkraut, kefir etc, may be one of the most important steps you can take to improve your health

Will Congress Grant Biotech Companies Immunity from Federal Law?
The Farmers Assurance provision added to the 2013 Farm Bill by biotech proponent Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) will, if passed into law, grant biotech companies like Monsanto immunity from federal law
The rider would require biotech crops to be planted even if a federal court calls for a halt pending an Environmental Impact Statement. It also restricts regulations and allows fast-track approval of genetically engineered (GE) crops
38 food business, retailers, consumer-, family farm-, environmental- and public interest groups have expressed their opposition to the provision, calling for it to be stricken from the farm bill
Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) has sponsored an amendment to the bill that would nullify Kingston's disastrous provision

What Does It Mean to Be Fat Adapted?
Sugar-dependency is an abnormal metabolic state that inevitably leads to insulin resistance and chronic disease
Once you are fat-adapted, your body can effectively burn stored fat for energy throughout the day, and can effectively oxidize dietary fat for energy. Hence less fat will be stored in fat tissue
If you can handle exercising without having to carb-load, you’re probably fat-adapted. If you can work out effectively in a fasted state, you’re definitely fat-adapted
Why Does Breakfast Make Me Hungry?
Many people feel hungry after eating breakfast, which may be because breakfast time coincides with your circadian cortisol peak -- the time of day when your cortisol (stress hormone) levels rise and reach their peak
The circadian cortisol peak has an impact on your insulin secretion, such that when you eat during this time it leads to a rapid and large insulin release, and a corresponding rapid drop in blood sugar levels that can make you feel hungry
By skipping breakfast, or delaying it until later in the day (a form of intermittent fasting), you may be able to reduce food cravings and hunger for the rest of the day
Intermittent fasting, which can mean delaying certain meals, such as skipping breakfast and exercising on an empty stomach, or even ending your meals earlier in the evening or late afternoon and fasting overnight while you sleep, may result in numerous health benefits, including weight loss and a positive impact on longevity

How Fructose Turns ON Your “Fat Switch”
If you have ever struggled losing weight and keeping it off, you already know what a challenge that can be. In his new book, The Fat Switch, Dr. Richard Johnson overturns age old paradigms about diet and obesity by revealing how fructose turns your body into a fat-storage machine—not by way of excess calories but by turning on your “fat switch”
He addresses the myth that large portions of food and too little exercise are responsible for weight gain
Hibernating animals regulate their body weight with distinct periods of gaining and losing fat and that has been an enormously useful adaption advantage. This appears to be regulated by a switch in the mitochondria that is turned on and off by a common food that no longer provides survival advantage to humans living in contemporary society
Contrary to the traditional view, which says that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, the reality is that breakfast may be one of the LEAST important meals, because skipping it may allow you to enter into a more efficient fat burning phase
War on Health: The FDA's Cult of Tyranny
Five years ago, a Subcommittee on Science and Technology report entitled “FDA Science and Mission at Risk” detailed how the FDA cannot fulfill its mission, in part because its scientific base has eroded and its scientific organizational structure is weak
The report found that the development of medical products based on “new science” cannot be adequately regulated by the FDA, the agency does not have the capacity to carry out risk assessment and analysis, and that the agency’s science agenda “lacks coherent structure and vision, as well as effective coordination and prioritization.” The subcommittee concluded the FDA’s failures place the health of Americans and the financial health of the nation at grave risk
Gary Null’s documentary film War on Health: The FDA's Cult of Tyranny features pioneering American and European attorneys, physicians, medical researchers and advocates of health freedom, and exposes the FDA's militaristic operations against organic food providers and alternative physicians
It recently came to light that the FDA has engaged in sophisticated spying and surveillance activities against scientists on its staff who expressed concerns over the agency’s approval of medical imaging devices, such as mammograms, that expose patients to dangerous levels of radiation
According to one recent report, if the current trend continues, by the year 2035 the average family will face medical costs in excess of 100 percent of their income. Part of the answer to avert this disaster is to allow alternative and complementary medicine to flourish and replace unscientific conventional therapies

Consumers for Dental Choice Shakes up the Debate on Dental Mercury
Amalgam is an archaic, dangerous dental practice left over from the US Civil War Era and is driven entirely by profits, without regard for human health
A landmark economics report reveals that after environmental costs are taken into account, amalgam is significantly more expensive than the non-mercury alternatives. In fact, the real cost of an amalgam filling is up to $87 more than a composite filling after the environmental costs of each material is considered
Another recent report by the European Commission recommends phasing out dental amalgam to reduce mercury pollution, which threatens the health of the environment, wildlife, and humans

Simple Trick Removes Pesticides from Your Vegetables & Fruits
There are a number of different types of vinegar; each with its own set of benefits and uses. White distilled vinegar is useful for cleaning and horticultural purposes, while fruit vinegars such as apple cider vinegar has many reported health benefits when taken internally
The only vinegar that is best avoided altogether is 20% vinegar, which is a petroleum derivative that is dangerous to breathe and can be damaging to your eyes and skin
A vinegar solution can also be used to remove certain pesticides and bacteria from your fresh produce. Other uses include hair care, and improving the pH of alkaline water, which can benefit plant growth
Vinegar recipes for treating a sore throat; treating various types of pet ailments; and making a non-toxic weed killer are included
Which Oil Will Help You Absorb Nutrients Better?
A new animal study found that coconut oil (a saturated fat) enhanced tissue uptake of tomato carotenoids to a greater degree than safflower oil (a polyunsaturated fat)
The benefit may be due to coconut oil’s medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs), which are easily digested and have been linked to health benefits such as weight loss
A healthy diet, one that includes healthy fats like coconut oil, raw foods for enzymes, and fermented foods for beneficial bacteria, will work synergistically to help you absorb the most nutrients from the food you eat

Surprise! Vitamin D Can Help or Hinder Your Weight Management
A study of more than 4,600 women age 65 and older shows that having low vitamin D levels can contribute to mild weight gain. Women who had insufficient levels of vitamin D gained about two pounds more compared to those with adequate blood levels of vitamin D during the 4.5-year long study. Those with insufficient levels also weighed more at the outset of the study
More than half of obese adolescents seeking weight loss surgery are deficient in vitamin D, according to a recent study. Eight percent were found to have severe deficiencies, and teens with the highest weights were the most likely to be vitamin D deficient. Less than 20 percent had adequate vitamin D levels
An inexpensive and convenient way to get your vitamin D levels tested on a regular basis is to join the GrassrootsHealth D*Action Project, which provides accurate home-testing kits at http://www.grassrootshealth.net/ . An Alternative to the Sun is A Safe Tanning Bed
Small Farmers of Heritage-Breed Pigs Under Attack in Michigan
On April 1, 2012, the Invasive Species Order (ISO), issued by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), went into effect
The ISO prohibits anyone in the state from possessing what MDNR defines as “invasive species of swine,” which can basically include any type of hog raised outside of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs)
Any farmer or other individual found to be in possession of such a hog could be charged with a felony and subjected to up to two years in jail and a $20,000 fine
The ISO threatens farmer’s rights and may make sustainably raised pastured pork essentially illegal, and very hard to come by in the state
The ISO is not a law; rather, it’s an “action” or “order” that’s been taken by a state agency; as such, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has the authority to tell MDNR to rescind the ISO, and your help is needed to prompt this action
Sign the online petition opposing the ISO http://www.farmtoconsumer.org/petitions/pnum1097.php

Is Dentistry Finally Entering the 21st Century?
While entrenched pro-mercury interests claim amalgams are necessary as an inexpensive option, once the environmental cost of the mercury is taken into account, an amalgam filling is much more expensive than a composite filling – up to $87 more
Consumers for Dental Choice has changed the paradigm in the amalgam battle, but the old amalgam habit is hard to break. The landmark economics The Real Cost of Dental Mercury study tells us why: Dentists who use amalgam are not paying the price of the environmental havoc they are wreaking. Instead, they are passing on that cost to taxpayers who foot the clean-up bill
The track record of Consumers for Dental Choice shows the organization is both effective and efficient in its charge to end the use of dental mercury worldwide – from breaking down the gag rule upheld by state dental boards (which did not permit dentists to disclose that “silver fillings” contained toxic mercury), to organizing and partnering with mercury-free dentistry groups around the world in a formidable effort to make sure amalgams are included in the final mercury treaty session in Geneva in January 2013
Anemia Drug Made Billions but at What Cost?
Three anemia drugs -- Epogen, Procrit and Aranesp -- After millions of people have taken these drugs, an investigation by the Washington Post revealed the benefits were “wildly overstated, and potentially lethal side effects, such as cancer and strokes, were overlooked”
Thanks to the drug companies’ lobbying, doctors and hospitals received major incentives for prescribing the drugs, particularly at high dosages
Effectiveness claims were based on a series of incomplete and never-published research, some of which were drawn out over a decade or more only to show inconclusive results; safety data was also misleading, and results showing a higher risk of death and heart attacks in patients taking higher doses of the drugs were downplayed

How to Make Drinking Water Safer with Natural Disinfection Processes
In third-world countries, sunlight exposure is often used to help make water safer, but this natural disinfection process can take anywhere from six to 48 hours (depending on cloud cover and so on)
Researchers have discovered that adding lime juice to the water, and then exposing it to sunlight, makes this disinfection method even more powerful, significantly reducing levels of bacteria like E. coli in just 30 minutes
Natural disinfection processes like these could have an extremely beneficial impact in countries that don’t have ready access to clean drinking water
In the United States, most municipal water supplies use chlorine as a disinfectant, which creates disinfection byproducts (DBPs) linked to cancer, reproductive problems and other health risks
Pregnancy Alters Resident Gut Microbes
The composition of a woman’s gut microbes actually changes during each trimester of pregnancy in ways that support the growth of the fetus.
During pregnancy the microbes actually become less diverse and the number of beneficial bacteria decline while disease-related bacteria increase; under normal circumstances, such changes could lead to weight gain and inflammation, but in pregnancy, they induce metabolic changes that promote energy storage in fat tissue so the fetus can grow
The importance of gut flora continues during and after birth, and may have a profound influence on the baby’s health and development
Maintaining optimal gut flora by eating raw food grown in healthy, organic soil and 'reseeding' your gut with naturally fermented foods or probiotics may be one of the most important steps you can take to improve your health and your baby’s during pregnancy

Heavy Metal Toxicity Raises Your Risk of Electromagnetic Sensitivity
Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from cell phones, cell phone towers, wireless Internet, power lines, household electrical wiring and more can trigger serious symptoms, including headaches, fatigue and confusion, in people who are electrosensitive
There are a number of factors that influence the degree to which you may be affected by EMFs, and your level of heavy metal toxicity is likely one of them
Heavy metals in your brain also act as micro-antennas, concentrating and increasing reception of EMF radiation
Any kind of metal implants and/or amalgam (silver) tooth fillings will significantly increase reception of microwaves, and the mircrocurrents from cell phones and other ambient fields

Surprise! Chocolate CAN Be Good for You, at the Right Dose
I provide a video on how to make healthy homemade chocolate with no sugar that allows you to benefit from all of chocolate’s many benefits while avoiding the toxic additives of most all commercial chocolate. Click on the above link.
Dr. Beatrice Golomb discusses the health benefits of chocolate, including how to identify a high-quality chocolate and how to determine your optimal chocolate “dose”
Polyphenols in cacao can help protect your heart by preventing the adverse effects of nitric oxide (NO) production and helping to counter your age-related decline in NO production
When selecting chocolate, choose one that is high in cacao/cocoa, low in sugar, organic, free of additives, and whose only fat is cocoa butter, which is the type of healthful fat naturally found in cacao beans

Is it True that Eggs are as Bad for Your Arteries as Smoking? [No. It's BS from biased corporate interests.]
A recent study claims eating egg yolks on a regular basis is bad. But two of the study’s authors have vested interests in statin drugs, and the third helped create the vegan “Portfolio Diet,” which only allows egg substitutes
Animal sources contain good cholesterol, not something that will harm you. Cholesterol is in every cell in your body, where it helps to produce cell membranes, hormones, vitamin D and bile acids that help you to digest fat
While organic pastured eggs are some of the healthiest foods you can eat, you’ll want to avoid omega-3 eggs, which typically come from chickens that are fed poor-quality sources of omega-3 fats that are already oxidized. You also want to eat your eggs raw, or lightly cooked, as cooking the egg will oxidize the cholesterol
Use Baking Soda to Remove Splinters -- and to Address Many Other Health Needs
Taken internally, baking soda helps maintain the pH balance in your bloodstream; this is likely the basic premise behind its recommended uses against both colds and influenza symptoms
Baking soda is useful for treating minor ailments like sunburn and insect bites, it works as a natural deodorant and toothpaste, and it can be used for cleaning virtually every room in your home
- Splinter removal: Add a tablespoon of baking soda to a small glass of water, then soak the affected area twice a day. Many splinters will come out on their own after a couple of days using this treatment.
- Insect bites: Apply a paste made of baking soda and water to insect bites to help relieve itching. You can also try rubbing the dry powder onto your skin. This is also effective for itchy rashes and poison ivy.
- Plaque-busting tooth and gum paste: For an incredibly effective tooth and gum paste, use a mixture of six parts of baking soda to one part of sea salt. Place them in a blender and mix for 30 seconds, then place in a container to use. Wet the tip of your index finger and place a small amount of the salt and soda mixture on your gums. Starting with the upper outside gums and then the inside of the upper, followed by the lower outside of the gums then the lower inside, rub the mixture onto your teeth and gums. Spit out the excess. After 15 minutes rinse your mouth. This mixture is incredibly effective at killing bacteria.
- Teeth whitener: For a natural way to whiten your teeth, crush one ripe strawberry and mix it with 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda. Spread the mixture onto your teeth and leave on for five minutes. Then brush your teeth and rinse. This method should be used no more than once a week, as excessive use could potentially damage your tooth enamel.
- Detox bath: Baking soda and apple cider make a wonderful spa-like bath for soaking away aches and pains and detoxing. It also cleans the tub and the drain, as a bonus!

Confirmed: India’s Polio Eradication Campaign in 2011 Caused 47,500 Cases of Vaccine-Induced Polio Paralysis
The media is reporting that polio has been eradicated in India, thanks to a massive oral polio vaccination drive encompassing nearly 170 million children; however, the vaccine uses a live virus that is linked to vaccine-induced polio paralysis
A paper published in the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics found 47,500 cases of so-called non-polio acute flaccid paralysis (NPAFP), a polio-like condition that is clinically indistinguishable from polio paralysis but twice as deadly, linked to the oral polio vaccine
It’s also estimated that up to 180 Indian children develop vaccine-associated polio paralysis (VAPP) each year
Vaccines alone don't eradicate disease; polio spreads largely through feces-contaminated water, so ignoring the poor sanitation and lack of clean water in third-world countries, along with the lack of healthy food to support their immune systems, is ignorant if the goal is really to eradicate the disease
Dr. Mercola Interviews Ronnie Cummins about GM Labeling Proposition
The largest opportunity to give people the right to know if their food is genetically engineered will occur with the California ballot initiative – or now the official Proposition 37. Your support before the November 6 vote can make all the difference between winning and losing
Since California is the 8th largest economy in the world, a win for the California Initiative would be a huge step forward, and would likely affect ingredients and GM labeling nationwide
Opponents to the labeling initiative, which include the biotech industry, the conventional food industry and supermarket chains, are coming out in droves; an ongoing consumer and grassroots effort will be needed to get Proposition 37 passed
If you live in California, talk to organic producers and stores and ask them to actively support the California Ballot; it may be the only chance we have to label genetically engineered foods before it’s too late. Even if you don’t live in California, you can get involved to support this historic campaign. Click on the previous link.

Where’s the Evidence Proving TSA’s Backscatter Scanners are Safe? Nowhere
Two years ago, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) filed a lawsuit to suspend the deployment of body scanners at US airports, pending an independent review. On July 15, 2011, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the TSA had violated the Administrative Procedures Act by implementing body scanners as a primary screening method without first undertaking public notice and comment rulemaking. The Court ordered the agency to "promptly" undertake the proper rulemaking procedures
The TSA has so far defied the court’s order. On July 17, 2012, EPIC again asked the D.C. Circuit court of appeals to compel the agency to comply with the law, and the court has now demanded the TSA respond by August 30
Both houses of Congress filed bills this year demanding that the TSA and DHS produce proof of their safety claims with an independent laboratory study
At the end of last year, the EU banned all scanning that expose the public to ionizing radiation, even if the exposure is miniscule
No verifiable, independent scientific testing of the safety of the backscatter scanners has been made, and some scientists believe the high quality images produced cannot possibly be obtained with the low levels of radiation described, and that the actual level may be 45 times higher than what the manufacturer is claiming
The Soap You Should Never Use -- But 75% of Households Do
Triclosan, a high production volume ingredient used as a bactericide in personal care products such as toothpaste and deodorant, has been linked to heart disease and heart failure in a new study
Researchers also exposed individual human muscle cells (from heart and skeletal muscles) to a triclosan dose similar to everyday-life exposure, and this, too, disrupted muscle function and caused both heart and skeletal muscles to fail
Triclosan has also been linked to disruption of hormone function
Triclosan is listed on product ingredient labels, so you can easily check to see if it is there before deciding on a purchase
- This site http://www.beyondpesticides.org/antibacterial/products.htm has a list of products containing Triclosan.
- Here is the list of Soaps to avoid: Dial® Liquid handsoap and bodywash; Tea Tree Therapy™ Liquid Soap; Clearasil® Daily Face Wash; Dermalogica® Skin Purifying Wipes; Clean & Clear Foaming Facial Cleanser; DermaKleen™ Antibacterial Lotion Soap; CVS Antibacterial Soap, Ultra Concentrated Dawn Antibacterial Dishsoap, Kimcare Antibacterial Clear Soap, Bath and Body Works Antibacterial Hand Soaps, Gels and Foaming Sanitizers.
- Many other personal care products, toys etc also contain it. See the list.

Why have Antipsychotic Prescriptions in Children Skyrocketed?
In recent years, there has been a massive increase in off-label use of atypical antipsychotics. While most are only approved for the treatment of serious mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, this class of drugs is now increasingly prescribed for ailments such as anxiety, insomnia, and behavioral problems in children
Aggressive, and oftentimes illegal, marketing by drug companies is believed to be a major contributing factor to skyrocketing misuse of dangerous antipsychotics in children. In recent years, every major manufacturer of atypical antipsychotics has been caught illegally marketing their drugs for unapproved uses in children and adolescents
According to a recent study, nearly two-thirds of all antipsychotic drugs prescribed to children between 2005 and 2009 were for the treatment of ADHD and other disruptive behavior disorders. In teens, 34 percent of all antipsychotic prescriptions were for these conditions
Top 12 guidelines for correcting your child’s behavioral problems without or at least before resorting to drugs are included in the previous link
An Urgent Message from Ronnie Cummins on GM Labeling Proposition
You can help to pass the United State’s first GMO labeling law – Proposition 37 – that will require labeling of genetically modified (GM) foods and food ingredients – and ban the routine industry practice of labeling and marketing such foods as "natural."
Prop 37 is the best chance we have of defeating the corporate agri-giants and of forcing food manufacturers to stop hiding potentially dangerous ingredients in our food, without our knowledge.
Please sign the petition below today. When we reach the goal of 200,000 signatures, it will be hand delivered to the White House and the Organic Consumers Association will make sure to have national media on hand to help spread the message.

U.S. Kids Drowning In Diet Drinks
More kids than ever in the United States are abusing diet drinks – approximately double the number that were drinking them a decade ago
A new study shows that 12.5 percent of children are now drinking artificially sweetened beverages
Diet sodas are actually worse for your health than regular soda, due to the artificial sweeteners they contain, and have been linked to weight gain, obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, stroke, addiction, and other health issues
To give your child the best start in life, and help instill healthy habits that will last a lifetime, you must lead by example; teach your children about the risks of both sugar-sweetened and diet beverages, and give them options for healthy alternatives
